Another Frost

We had another cold night last night. The temperature got down around 34 degrees. That's not a problem for the grass really except that we also had a frost on the ground! Frost is what takes the color out of the grass this time of year. Our grass was much greener until we got a couple of frosts on February 14th and 15th. Those two frosts really knocked a lot of the color out of our grass.  And then with the frost last night it just keeps the grass brown and dormant and will take longer for it to be real green. The grass will really start to grow once the temps at night can stay above 60 degrees. Just wanted to give an update on how the grass is coming along.  Thanks for checking in with us!...

33 Tips and Tricks for iOS 6

This post isn't about grass or sod or even Murff Turf really but since we mostly use iOS devices we thought it might interest some of our website readers also.  Sorry we don't have a link to tips for Android users!  We don't have anything against Android but since we don't use it we don't keep up with the what's going on in that world too much. This is just a link to an article in Macworld by Dan Moren and Lex Friedman about tips and tricks you might not know about in iOS 6.  There are some really good things in there.  We really like the one about having highlighted text read to you in different accents!  Hope it helps!  ...

Winter is a Good Time To Plant

Winter is a Good Time To Plant

Just a reminder that the winter months are a great time to plant grass.  Yes, the grass you purchase will probably be yellow or brown because the warm-season grasses we grow in Texas turn dormant in the winter; but the grass is alive and healthy and can put down roots now and be ready to take off once the temperatures warm up. And since the grass is dormant and we usually receive regular rains in the winter months the newly planted grass requires MUCH less water from you to get established!  Usually one good rain or watering from you right after you plant is all you will need to do this time of year. Here's a couple of pictures from grass we harvested on Thursday, January 31st.  You can see it has a little green color to it but it doesn't have the normal bright green of spring.  But it is healthy and ready to be planted. We sometimes get asked why...

Okay so that's not from this year but December 2009, so not too long ago.  That was fun! We will be closed Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th for the Christmas Holidays!  We hope you are able to take a couple of days off and spend some quality time with your family too! So when we close this Friday the 21st, we won't be harvesting any grass until Wednesday morning.   You can put your orders in for Wednesday but just know we won't have any available early that morning! We will also be closed Monday the 31st, and Tuesday, January 1st, for the New Year's Holidays.  Thank you and have a safe and happy holiday!...

Discovery Bermudagrass On A Zero Energy House

Discovery Bermudagrass On A Zero Energy House

Last week we took some Discovery Bermudagrass to a couple of new houses in Independence Heights. These houses are being built to use LESS energy than they GENERATE and USE!  The extra energy created will be sold back to the utility company.  It's a great idea and hopefully more of these are coming in the future.  You can get more info on the houses themselves at thezeroenergyhome.com.  We should have Discovery Bermudagrass available to the general public in the Summer of 2013. Below are some pictures of the Discovery on pallets prior to being installed and then a couple after installation.  The reason they're using this grass on these energy efficient homes is because Discovery Bermudagrass will require 50% less mowing! ...
